Module Six:
Faid®Safe - Management
Training & Education
The lessons learned from industry-based
collaborations suggest that responsible
fatigue risk management requires
fatigue to be managed as an Occupational
Health and Safety issue rather
than an industrial issue.
Moreover, fatigue risk management
should be viewed as a shared responsibility:
- Employers have a duty-of–care
to provide safe work schedules
that permit an adequate amount
of time for an employee to
sleep, rest and recover as
well as fulfil their social
and domestic responsibilities.
- Conversely, employees have
a duty-of-care to use their
time away from work in a safe
and responsible manner. That
is, to ensure that they obtain
sufficient sleep and recovery
in order to complete their
work duties in a safe and
responsible manner.
This module is a three hour training
and education program, designed
to be delivered to all managers
involved in the organisation's
business. Particular attention
is placed on developing awareness
of the concept of fatigue safe
systems built on a risk engineering
framework and the design of fatigue
safeguards to achieve acceptable
risk levels.

- Business Wide Compliance
Monitoring
This module includes the selection
and implementation of a Management
and Operations Support System,
including FAID®
fatigue risk assessment software,
to perform routine (weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual)
assessment and monitoring of ongoing
hours of work fatigue risks. A
balanced focus is given to both
Planned Work Schedules and Actual
Work Schedules. The impact on
projected fatigue risk levels
of factors such as seasonality,
callouts, overtime, sick leave
and shift swaps are included in
the monitoring and reporting system.
Highly visual reports and views
are used to focus on business
wide, local operations and individual
compliance with organisational
and legislated fatigue safety
level targets.
A key focus of the compliance
monitoring systems is a balanced
view of historical and projected
risks associated with job tasks
and hours of work.
Faid®Safe Business Wide Compliance
Monitoring incorporates the following
Fatigue Graid® Risk factors:
- hours of operations (i.e.
day/afternoon/night operations)
- seasonality impacts on workload
vs workforce balance
- nature of rosters (i.e. rotating,
fixed, on-demand, standby)
