Welcome to Focus on Fatigue, the official FaidSafe® newsletter

Welcome to Focus on Fatigue

Happy New Year to you from the FaidSafe® team. We hope that you enjoy the following articles about fatigue and safety management systems. This year we would like to make this newsletter more about lessons learned from our clients about fatigue risk and safety management systems.

If you have a storey to tell please email me at the link below.

InterDynamics once again thanks all of it's clients and partners for their support throughout the last year, and instead of posting Christmas cards last year, a donation was made to TEAR Australia to contribute to training a teacher in Zambia, paying their salary and supporting the running of a community primary or pre-primary school for a year. See the e-card here.

Work safely.

Conference Announcement & Invitation to Attend Managing Fatigue in Transportation

After highly successful meetings in Seattle & Boston the conference returns to Fremantle, Western Australia on March 21-24, 2011 for its 8th International Meeting.

Specialists call for review of sleep services

New Zealand sleep services were poorly resourced to deal with the current burden of sleep apnoea, with up to 10 per cent of the adult population suffering, Christchurch Hospital sleep specialist Michael Hlavac said today. In most cases, the condition was not recognised and not treated and this was a major concern given the known consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnoea.
New Zealand Herald – 28 Oct 2010

'Wake up Call ' 'Sleep Debt'

Ask people whether they would like more sleep, and most will say yes. Does that mean they are not sleeping enough? The apparent desire for more shuteye, together with oft-repeated assertions that our grandparents slept longer, all too easily leads to the conclusion that we in the west are chronically sleep-deprived. Adding to these concerns are recent claims that inadequate sleep causes obesity and related disorders, such as diabetes.

Heavy Vehicle Driver Fatigue Laws for South Australia and all other states and territories except WA and the ACT.

These laws have been in place since 2008

  • promote positive fatigue management systems to ensure the safety of drivers and increase safety for all road users
  • monitor the hours that drivers of heavy trucks and buses can spend working (including driving) and resting
  • monitor the records that must be kept.

Products

FAID® v2.0 Software
FAID® sits as one of the flagship tools within the FaidSafe® - Fatigue Risk Management suite of products and consulting services.
FAID® is an internationally recognised bio-mathematical model used to estimate work-related fatigue based on hours of work. As part of an overall Safety Management System, FAID® can assist in identifying fatigue exposure and tracking the effects of associated risk improvements to hours of work.
Using formulae developed and validated by Dr Adam Fletcher and Professor Drew Dawson at the Centre for Sleep Research, University of South Australia, the statistical models in FAID® estimate work-related fatigue based on 4 factors:

  1. Time of day of work and breaks
  2. Duration of work and breaks
  3. Work history in the preceding seven days
  4. Biological limits on recovery sleep

Example of fatigue chart measuring predicted indicative fatigue exposure for each hour worked of various shifts. This enables you to predict relative levels of staff fatigue resulting from hours of work. You can also view fatigue distribution across all the staff working at any one time and refine rosters for maximum efficiency. In addition you can track fatigue levels in relation to incident frequency, absenteeism levels and employee sick days to show the relationship between high indicative fatigue levels and its related costs to the organisation.

FAID® is recognised and used by regulators and key industry players around the world within the Aviation, Rail, Road, Mining, Marine, Customs, Police, Health, and Emergency Services sectors (among others)
